What is The Average Stay in Detox and Drug Rehab?

By: Rhea Rosier, Palm Partners Recovery Center

December 22nd, 2011

The average stay in detox and drug rehab can vary based on how severe your drug and alcohol use was. The average length of stay in detox is significantly shorter than in drug rehab because the detoxification process is just simply the seperation of a client from the drugs and alcohol. Detox is the beginning 5-10 days of physical detox. The mental and spiritual aspects of the disease of alcoholism and addiction are not addressed until the drug rehab part of the treatment program begins.

The average stay in detox usually consists of an admission process, a clinician addressing the medical needs of a client, and a comfortable environment to relax in. Depending on what drugs the client has been using and how much the client has been drinking determines the length of stay in detox. The average stay in detox though will be until a client is deemed medically stable and able to function physically without being under constant 24 hour supervision.

The average stay in drug rehab is a bit longer than a few days. The reason for this is because drug rehab is the actual healing process after the physical seperation has been completed. Drug rehab is where clients learn how to stay sober for a lifetime. They will go through new and life changing experiences that will give them tools to cope with life, tools to live a life that is manageable, and the knowledge to gain awareness into exactly what they are dealing with. Drug rehab experiences can vary from dancing, to individual therapy, to womens and mens groups, all the way to acupuncture or massage therapy. The average stay of drug rehab can last up to three months and that is not including the aftercare programs if a client chooses to utilize them. Most drug rehabs have some kind of alumni program that allows clients to stay connected to the staff and other clients for a lifetime.

The average stay in detox and drug rehab totally together can be as short as 5 days up to 3 months and if choosing to do so, a detox and drug rehab can be a part of a clients life for years.
