In the News: Hazelden and Betty Ford Have Merged

Two leading addiction treatment providers, Hazelden and Betty Ford Center recently announced that their merger has been approved by government regulators, creating what is to be called the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, which is now the nation’s largest nonprofit treatment organization.

Approval by the California Attorney General was the final step in the process for regulation and with it, the new foundation is now in effect.

In a statement they made together, the Hon. Susan Fox Gillis and Dr. Mary Turner Pattiz, the chair and vice chair respectively of the Board of Trustees for the new Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, said, “We are proud of the individual legacies of both Hazelden and the Betty Ford Center and excited to come together as one today. With decades of combined expertise and industry-leading knowledge, we are poised now to bring even more innovation and leadership to our mission of restoring hope, healing and health to more individuals and families.”

Betty Ford Center

Prior to the merger, the Betty Ford Center was autonomously a non-profit alcohol and drug addiction treatment hospital located in Rancho Mirage, California. It was founded by the now late U.S. First Lady Betty Ford, Leonard Firestone, and Dr. James West in 1982.

The Betty Ford Clinic (TBC) was a non-profit, separately licensed residential chemical dependency recovery hospital that offered inpatient, outpatient, and residential day treatment for alcohol addiction and other drug addictions. TBC also offered prevention and education programs for family and children.

On February 10, 2014, it was announced that Betty Ford Center merged with the Hazelden Foundation to form the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation.

The Hazelden Foundation

Hazelden began in 1949 as a simple farmhouse retreat called the Old Lodge. At its inception, it was established to treat alcoholic men, only. The recovery program at Hazelden was based on the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous, and therefore is a Twelve Step program.

The Hazelden Foundation like TBC, was a non-profit organization. It’s based in Center City, Minnesota but has a network of drug and alcohol treatment facilities located in Minnesota, Oregon, Chicago, Florida, and New York City. Hazelden primarily offered residential treatment for addiction in adults and teens, including outpatient treatment, aftercare services, as well as a family program. In September 2013, it merged with the Betty Ford Center to form the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation to be headquartered in Minnesota.
